Prenatal Pampering at the Shangri-La

If you’re expecting I’d highly encourage you to take the time out for some prenatal pampering before the new edition arrives. I love getting massages, so I went for some prenatal pampering at the Shangri-La with my friend Natalie who was also expecting!

It’s so important to take care of yourself at all times, but especially when you are expecting. There are many different ways to indulge in prenatal pampering but one of my favourites is getting a massage at a luxury spa!

The Miraj Hammam Spa by Caudalie offers a number of treatments including a personalized pregnancy massage. Natalie and I decided to have a girls day and we were treated to a lovely 30 minute massage to help us relax and prepare to welcome our little ones to the world.

Note: Be sure your massage therapist is registered so that he or she has experience and is trained to treat pregnant women.

A prenatal massage is similar to a regular massage except that an expecting mother can’t lie on her stomach. Lying on your back for a long time isn’t recommend either so the massage is conducted while you lie on your side.

The massage was just what I needed to relieve sore muscles from carrying around extra weight, driving to work each day and sitting at a desk. You can customize it to your needs; since every pregnancy is different you may have different areas of aches and pains. For me, this was my back, neck and shoulders – so I asked my massage therapist to concentrate on those areas.

At first I thought 30 minutes would be too short of a time – 60 or 90 minutes would have been pure heaven; but 30 minutes was enough time for me to feel relaxed without getting overly tired.

After The Massage

The prenatal pampering didn’t stop there. Natalie and I met up in the spa’s lounge to catch up (quietly) while enjoying some light, sweet snacks. We even ran into a couple there who were expecting twins! They were also at the spa for a little R&R before welcoming their bundles of joy.

The lounge is dim and comfortable and it was perfect for reflecting on the amazing treatment we both just had. Sometimes pampering comes in the form of just shutting off the outside world and taking the time to sit quietly. This is so important for expecting moms since once the baby arrives there won’t be much quiet time at all!

A Light Lunch

Enjoying a really great meal is another form of prenatal pampering. Once the baby makes its arrival, meals out will be put on hold for a while!

Natalie and I headed down to BOSK where we soaked in the last bit of summer on the patio and to further share our pregnancy experiences with each other and our worries about the actual birth. The quality food and excellent service really hit the spot for us. We vowed to make it back there with babies in tow!

The Importance of Self-Care

It doesn’t really matter how you choose to pamper yourself during your pregnancy; the important thing is that you do it! Having a bonding girls day out is a great way to relieve some stress you may be feeling while taking the time out to care for yourself. After all, it may be difficult to find the time for yourself afterwards so it’s a good idea to do it while you can. This way you are taking care of yourself both physically and mentally which will allow you to cope with the stresses of being a mom.

What are your thoughts on prenatal pampering? How would you indulge?
